Sylvain Grenier

Sylvain Grenier is a Québécois Canadian professional wrestler, formerly one-half of the tag-team, La Resistance. He currently performs in World Wrestling Entertainment on its SmackDown! brand.

Grenier (pronounced Grahn-yay) was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1977 and as a young man was involved in baseball, tennis and hockey. He was an active wrestler in Montreal's nCw known as Sly, as well as a male model. Grenier auditioned for Tough Enough 1 and 2, but was unable to attend due to visa issues. It was while he was in Florida training and attending a modeling shoot that he met WWE agent Pat Patterson, who invited him to a WWE event for a tryout match. It was there that Grenier impressed WWE officials enough to get a contract with Ohio Valley Wrestling.

He made his debut on a WWE PPV not as a wrestler but as a referee who pretended to be knocked out in Icon vs. Icon match 2. At a certain point Grenier threw a steel chair to the Rock who then used it against Hulk Hogan. Grenier soon was in the center of the ring with Vince McMahon and the Rock celebrating. One month later during the match "20 years in the making" Grenier ran down to the ring to officiate in the Hogan-McMahon match. Hogan would have none of it and promptly threw Grenier over the top rope.

He debuted in WWE as a wrestler with René Goguen (wrestling as René Duprée) as the heel tag team La Résistance, billed as a French team at a time when many Americans resented the French government for its perceived lack of support in the "War on Terror". A third wrestler, Rob Conway, was later added to La Résistance.

In March 2004, the stable was broken up when Goguen was "drafted" in a "lottery" by WWE's other brand, Smackdown!. However, La Résistance still existed as a team featuring Grenier and Conway. WWE then billed the team as French-Canadian's - the team carried the Flag of Quebec to the ring, and Grenier often sang the Canadian National Anthem, though this version disbanded when Grenier was sent to Smackdown! in an 11-person trade on June 30, 2005.
