Rey Mysterio

Óscar Gutiérrez Rubio, better known as Rey Misterio, Jr. or Rey Mysterio (born December 11, 1974 in San Diego, California) is a Mexican-American professional wrestler currently performing for World Wrestling Entertainment on the SmackDown! brand, in its cruiserweight division.

He is a luchador as is his uncle, Rey Misterio, Sr. He debuted as a wrestler in 1991 at the age of 17 in Tijuana, Mexico because he was too young to wrestle in the United States (no athletic commission would give him a license at his young age). There he feuded with another luchador, Psicosis which carried over in to the States and lasted several years. If spelled properly, his ring name translates to "Mystery King" in Spanish.

Extreme Championship Wrestling

In 1995 he and Psicosis went to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), making their first real impacts in American professional wrestling, outside of the WCW-promoted When Worlds Collide PPV. Their feud stopped for a while after a Mexican Death Match in November 1995 at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia.

World Championship Wrestling

In 1996, he joined Psicosis in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), continuing their feud on and off for a few years. Rey would find success there, winning the WCW Cruiserweight Championship on numerous occasions.

In 1999 he was involved in a feud with Kevin Nash. During this feud Rey showcased his willingness to put his body on the line to put across a good product when he allowed Nash to launch him into the side of a truck in a brutal fashion. The footage of this incident was shown on WCW TV for weeks to both show the sadisticness of the nWo wrestlers and the heart of the luchadores and more specifically Rey Mysterio Jr.. Their feud culminated in a Caballera vs. Mascara Match (Hair vs. Mask) which Rey lost (to the disgust of many internet purists). Now unmasked, he still found moderate success in WCW with The Filthy Animals until it was sold to the WWF in 2001.

Rey then went back to Mexico to work for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, unmasked, being involved in some high profile matches.

World Wrestling Entertainment

In 2002, Rey was then signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), but was asked to wear the mask again, which can have one fined and even have one's license suspended in lucha libre by the Box y Lucha Commission because once a wrestler loses his mask, he cannot regain it. However, donning the mask again wasn't Mysterio's decision. In deference to this tradition, when WWE produced the Rey Mysterio: 619 DVD, Rey did not wear his mask during segments shot in Mexico.

A popular performer and multiple-time WWE Cruiserweight champion, Rey has already made his mark in WWE. He is considered a great aerial wrestler and many also consider him a legend in the making. He has held the WCW/WWE Cruiserweight championship eight times, more than anyone else in history.

Feud with Eddie Guerrero

On February 20, 2005, Rey won his third WWE Tag-Team Championship along with long time friend, and former rival, Eddie Guerrero when they defeated Doug Basham and Danny Basham at the No Way Out PPV.

However, in a surprising departure from traditional booking, the new champions did not defend their titles at WrestleMania 21 on April 3, 2005, but instead faced one another, with Rey getting the victory and seeds of a breakup and Guerrero heel turn being planted.

After WrestleMania 21, Rey and Eddie ran into problems. Rey was disqualified from his Championship Series match with John Bradshaw Layfield on the April 7 edition of SmackDown! due to Eddie's interference. Rey was then attacked the following week by three new SmackDown! performers: Melina and her tag team MNM). Later that night, Eddie had a match with Kurt Angle, and the referee was knocked unconscious. Angle got a steel chair from the outside as Rey came out to help Eddie. He hit a modified West Coast Pop on Kurt, and picked up the chair. Eddie saw Rey in the ring with it and thought he was attacking him. As both were distracted, Kurt pushed Mysterio from behind, sending the chair into Guerrero's face, costing him the match. This continued miscommunication resulted in the team losing their tag titles to MNM on the April 21 edition of SmackDown!.

The following week on SmackDown!, the tension between Rey and Eddie finally came to a head during another match with MNM. After tagging in Rey, Guerrero refused to tag back in, although Rey was being double teamed. As Eddie watched indifferently from the ring apron, Rey was pinned and then beaten down by Nitro and Mercury. As Eddie sealed his heel turn by walking away, Rey appeared devastated by the act of betrayal from his once close friend.

The next week, Rey called Eddie out to fight. A reluctant Eddie refused to. Though General Manager Theodore Long could not schedule a fight between Rey and Eddie, he did schedule a street fight between Rey and the antagonizing Chavo Guerrero. Rey would win the match but would be beat down by Chavo and MNM post-match. Eddie Guerrero would then come out and chase away MNM and Chavo, only to viciously beat Mysterio, finishing by suplexing Rey back-first onto a set of steel steps. Rey was helped out of the arena by paramedics.

The following week on SmackDown!, Eddie came out to ringside with Rey's mask, still stained with Rey's blood. Guerrero then cut a blood-curdling promo threatening to take Mysterio's life during their match at Judgment Day. In their Judgment Day match, Rey won by disqualification after Eddie hit him with a steel chair. After the match, Eddie continued to beat Rey down with the chair until being restrained by agents and referees who came in from backstage.

Guerrero and Mysterio continued to feud, with Eddie threatening to reveal a secret he and Mysterio share involving Mysterio's son, Dominik, unless Mysterio defers to Eddie's authority. A match was scheduled for the July 24 Great American Bash, with the stipulations being that if Rey won, Eddie would not tell, but If Eddie wins, he would tell. Mysterio defeated Guerrero with his son at ringside.

On the July 28th Episode of Smackdown. Eddie Guerrero broke his promise and revealed to the world that he is Dominik's biological father. According to the storyline, years ago while Guerrero was living a little wild, he got a woman pregnant. Since she already had seven children, and knowing Mysterio was having trouble starting his own family, he took Dominick and left him with Rey and his wife to raise. Guerrero, after revealing this secret, told the fans that there was more to come the following week on Smackdown. On the August 4th episode of Smackdown, Eddie Guerrero appered on the TitanTron during Christians talk show The peep Show and started to reveal Part 2 to the world, but Rey Mysterio, who was the guest on the Peep Show, kept interrupting him so Eddie said he would reveal it later that night. As the Peep Show ended, Christan attacked Rey setting up the Main Event, Rey vs. Christian. During the match Eddie and an unknown woman came out and watched the match. The match ended with Rey connecting with the 619 and winning the match. Then Rey grabbed the microphone and told Eddie to come fight him but Eddie refused and sent the mystery woman to give Rey a copy of part 2 so he could read it. Part 2 ended up being custody papers for Dominick to come back to Eddie. Eddie said he would give Rey one chance to keep his son if Rey convinced Eddie that he truly loved Dominick. Rey said a lot of things about how he loved his son, but Eddie was not phased because the woman whispered something to him. So Eddie revealed the woman as his lawyer. Then, Eddie said that he would reveal part 3 and called Dominick come back to "Papi."

He appeared at ECW One Night Stand defeating Psicosis.
